Having your power steering fail is no fun. It can make your vehicle difficult to turn or control. Not everyone can steer or turn the steering wheel when this happens. Chevy owners ran into this problem with the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. The issue occurred when to much electrical power was used in the pickups, which caused the power steering to fail. According to Consumer Reports, almost 700,000 trucks have been recalled. It wasn’t until 2017 that Chevy became aware of the power steering loss when customers complained. The National Highway Traffic Safety Commission found the sudden loss of power happened during low-speed turning maneuvers.

At least, that’s what it seemed like until the vehicle traveled farther up the incline. “They’re almost to a stop, and you can hear the pop, and you see the airbag come down, and you hear the girl scream,” Matt said.

It is unimpressive from low to mid, but meters out the power so that it is more usable over a longer time frame. It makes 57.14 in stock trim and 58.14 with holes drilled in the airbox cover.

It makes its horsepower without any white-knuckle scariness. If you want more power, it is hidden inside the choked-up airbox and restrictor-equipped muffler. An enterprising Husky FC450 racer can get 57.50 horsepower with the airbox drilled, compared to 56.40 with the stock airbox cover.

Recognizing differences goes both ways. If you want the safety systems, you can buy them for your own vehicle. Just don’t passively force them on me and others through regulation and legislation.
