On a short and admittedly wimpy off-road section—the original location was unexpectedly graded smooth ahead of the trip—the AT4 barely broke a sweat, especially with the Traction Select System doing its thing. A suite of cameras showed the truck’s surroundings on the infotainment screen—very handy when you’ve nosed your way up a crest and can only see sky out the windshield, because the camera shows you what’s on the other side—including a birds-eye view for narrow trails.

Today’s front-drive cars to me are actually more difficult to handle in snow and ice, even though they have the ability to pull themselves out of trouble (cart behind the horse, vs the pusher drive of the older cars with the horse behind the cart. Think about it.) I got used to feeling the tail try to swing and bringing it back in line; front drive cars you have to do almost the exact opposite and add a touch of throttle to try and pull the car into line.
Did you even read the article? —- GM hired Orbital ATK, a Virginia rocket science firm that determined the cause of Takata’s airbag explosions, to test its truck inflators. As of December, Orbital ATK had checked 648 GM inflators by simulating heat and humidity cycles, finding that they would perform as designed for 30 years, according to GM. The automaker said that in 4,907 more inflators tested in labs and in 63,000 airbag deployments on real roads, none of the truck and SUV inflators malfunctioned.

It has bought two companies with battery capability, Brammo and Johnson Matthey Battery Systems, to secure more expertise in the field, with the aim of including battery power and range-extended power in its product line. It recently launched its Range Extender concept, which uses a battery pack with a smaller engine as a generator to charge it. However, the company does not believe that battery and charging technology is yet sufficiently advanced to make it viable for heavy equipment.
