Having any vehicle you own just randomly rolling down the street without the driver in it can be a very dangerous situation. It can also be dangerous if a driver leaves a passenger inside and steps out and the car begins to roll. Chevy had that issue with their 2014-2015 Chevy Silverado and Suburban pickup trucks. According to Car complaints, the problem was the transfer case.
The TV cable essentially replaced the vacuum modulator valve that was the load sensing device for the transmission. The cable moves the throttle valve in the valvebody and increases transmission line pressure as the throttle opens. This would appear to be a simple operation, and with stock components, it’s rarely an issue. But with aftermarket carburetors, EFI throttle bodies, and various linkage mounts, the opportunity for mistakes is rampant.

But when it comes to braking, both types of cars perform essentially the same… though at least until lately when it came to ‘black ice’ or otherwise ‘invisible’ ice, the ABS would think the car was at a dead stop… while you keep sliding into trouble. That ‘threshold and release’ technique still saved me one time as I was on an iced-over bridge headed for an intersection where the light had just turned red, nearly 500 feet in front of me. Now, I knew I was on a bridge and I was pretty sure I was on ice (we’d just had a snowstorm the night before) so I was almost literally crawling along the highway, maybe doing 20mph on the flat. Unfortunately, I was on a long, sweeping, downhill curve to the light at the bottom. I touched the brakes so lightly I couldn’t even feel any braking effort, but my steering said I was sliding. Release and the car would track the steering, touch the brakes and the car would slide. I did this I don’t know how many times as I made my way around that curve and finally came to a full stop… right in the middle of the intersection. Had I just locked down on the brakes, the ABS would have done nothing but let me slide off the road, helplessly.
The system is activated when the Colorado is put into reverse gear and is traveling below 5 mph (8km/h). While backing up under these conditions, the driver is alerted to a potential impact via the vehicle’s driver information center (DIC, pictured below), which shows the location (left, right or center) for rear-detected objects close to the vehicle. The system also delivers a series of audible beeps depending on the distance of the vehicle and a detected object.
Like Kostura’s truck, the vehicle ran just fine after the deployment, except something related to the seatbelt tensioners had apparently activated, preventing the belts from releasing all the way from their retracted positions. And, because he didn’t want to drive nearly 100 miles on the highway back to his place without a functioning seatbelt, the Colorado owner had his truck towed to a dealership to the tune of over $300.
