A clutch is used to couple and decouple a vehicle’s engine from its manual transmission so that the driver can shift gears. In a traditional clutch system, the clutch pedal is connected to the clutch by one of two methods. Older vehicles like pre-1987 Porsche 911′s (and many others) used a cable to link pedal to clutch. Most other cars use a hydraulic system that sees the clutch pedal attached to a hydraulic master cylinder that then uses fluid pressure to actuate a slave cylinder on the transmission itself.

Another benefit of an electronically-operated slave cylinder is that it would be possible to give control to a computer for certain operations such as stop and go traffic in order to prevent fatigue and the patent application even lists that as one of the benefits of such a system along with having a consistent feel even over longer periods of time which is not possible with a hydraulic system.

I would rather have ‘some’ tech than ‘none’. One problem as someone said before is that this crap is rolled out half baked, and we get to find the flaws. The first ABS equipped Grand Cherokees come to mind. I remember how on a steep descent the ABS wouldn’t allow the rig to come to a complete stop. That’s straight up dangerous.
